53 years ago, on July 6th, 1957, John Lennon and Paul McCartney were introduced through a mutual friend at a party in Woolton Parish Church in Liverpool. In a matter of months they became close friends, forming one of the best partnerships in history. Their influence on rock music and popular culture was—and remains—immense. From music to fashion to art and so on, there is no denying the massive stamp they left upon the world. This is one of the first known pictures of the two together, featuring John aged 16 and Paul aged 15, and it was taken by Leslie Kearney.

Paul McCartney’s schoolboy essay discovered

The work, unseen in public for 56 years and thought to be his earliest surviving creative effort, was written by McCartney when aged 10 to celebrate the coronation in 1953 and won him a book token presented by the lord mayor of Liverpool.
